From Oct 2008 to Jan 2009 we hosted an exhibition at our offices of work by one of our friends and clients Sheila Cassidy. Cards and postcards were on sale in reception with part of the proceeds going to Jeremiah's Journey a charity co-founded by Sheila in 1996. (The exhibition was featured in the March 2009 edition of Devon Life magazine as well as in local press.)
Sheila Cassidy is perhaps best known as the young doctor imprisoned and tortured for treating a wounded revolutionary in Pinochet’s Chile. On her release and return to England, she became an outspoken advocate for human rights and the author of the international bestseller Audacity to Believe.
Two years ago, Sheila began painting in oils, and her early studies of still life have come to include somewhat zany collections of colourful artefacts and a touch of fantasy including seagulls – an ever present resource for a painter who lives by the sea!
In Made for Laughter, she writes with stark honesty of her struggle to overcome depression and insomnia, and her courageous but unsuccessful attempt to establish a new kind of religious order for women. Made for Laughter is a story of grace under pressure, and an inspirational guide for everyone who has grappled with the puzzle of finding our true purpose in life. Impetuous and irrepressible, Sheila Cassidy has discovered that, in the words of Desmond Tutu, ‘We are all made for compassion, for caring, and for sharing – but also for laughter.’
A reception and private viewing on 3rd / 4th December proved very successful. Sheila was on hand to meet guests and sign copies of her latest book. Sales of cards and prints, supplemented by some kind donations, raised over £200 for Jeremiah's Journey.
