Keeping the Farm in the Family

  • Posted

Most farmers hope to keep the farm in the family for the next generation. However, this raises a host of complex issues and it is perhaps natural, and therefore unsurprising, that they fail to grasp the nettle.  It is always easier to put off the difficult questions.!

The SWLaw Country team will be looking at some of these problems at a seminar to be repeated at 3 locations in the South Hams later this month. A set of short presentations will be given on the general theme of succession planning. Speakers are barristers and solicitors with specialist experience of Agricultural Property, Family Law, Business structures, Wills and Trusts, Tax planning.

Smooth succession does not usually happen by accident: it does require a plan. It is advisable to start planning years ahead.  Open and honest discussion within the family is key.

We can help you plan for some of the obstacles to a smooth succession to the farming business as well as advising on tax and estate planning. The seminar should be of interest both to those looking towards retirement and to those who are hoping to follow parents in the family farming life.

The venues and times of the seminars are  at 6:30 for 7:00 pm :

- Monday 21st October at California Country Inn, Nr Modbury

- Thursday 24th October at Church House Inn, Rattery

- Tuesday 29th October at the Crabshell Inn, Kingsbridge

Places will be limited. Please give us a call, or drop us an email for further details or if you would like to register to attend: 01752 205202 (Alex)  or Alex.Birch@SWLaw.co.uk

We look forward to seeing you !
