The Palliative Care Funding Review team led by Thomas Hughes-Haslett has today, 1st July 2011, made its report to the Secretary of State for Health. Amongst the recommendations are ‘per patient’ funding system for NHS palliative care. The tariff would incentivise good outcomes and integrated care packages. The enquiry found that under the current funding system there was wide variation in services and funding. Of the 355,000 people need palliative care each year it is estimated that fewer than 50% receive specialist palliative care and that around 92,000 have unmet palliative care needs.
